HB1133: Private School Tuition Tax Credit Scholarship In 2008, the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 1133 and Governor Sonny Perdue signed it into law. This law provides for the creation of student scholarship organizations (SSOs) that use Georgia income tax credit-eligible contributions to provide public school, Pre-K4 or kindergarten-entry students with the opportunity to attend private schools. Click here for video of Representative David Casas (R-Lilburn), sponsor of bill. Donors receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit along with a federal deduction in return for their gift. Tax credits are issued on a first-come first-served basis up to a statewide annual cap of $50 million.
Similar programs are in place in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
